Social networking for lawyers

LawBiz® facilitated a webinar about social networking and the benefits of this new technology for lawyers. David Nour, an expert on Relationship Economics, joined me in what the audience described as an outstanding learning experience. As the saying goes, it was like "drinking from a fire hose."

Substantially more than 100 people signed up and others contacted me with calendar conflicts. By popular demand, we will do our program again; we also will produce a DVD of this week's program; and my teleseminar with West LegalEdcenter on December 9th at 11 a.m. PT will bring David and me together again for another edition of social networking.

Stay tuned. Subcribe to LawBiz® Tips for current information as it is posted.

I was one who attended, even though it was at 4:00 a.m. my time here in Japan. My thanks for hosting this program. You gave us several great ideas.

In particular, something was mentioned that I have already concluded from my own practice here in Japan, which is that one should only link to high quality, trusted contacts, since your network reflects on you. One especially finds in Japan that anything that looks like giving an endorsement or recommendation is taken extremely seriously by others -- even to the extent of holding you accountable for actions of the endorsee!

As a result, I am very careful about referrals. If there is the slightest doubt about the person I might recommend -- and even more so, about the one who is asking, since often I do not know them and do not have any reason to trust them -- I have learned through repeated, bitter experience to refuse to name anyone. BTW, that is exactly what every one of my Japanese professional colleagues do, too. It's a pity but the alternative bites us. Part of that is a cultural matter, but I think it applies in other countries as well. You might want to expand on this idea in future talks.

I have already begun to edit my LinkedIn profile based on your many valuable tips. I am sure that it will be better for it. Thanks again.

Norman
