Practice management tension

Yesterday, I spoke before the Austin (Central Texas) chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators. This session was their annual salute to managing partners and they had a full house.

In preparing my presentation, I suddenly realized that there is a tension between administrators/executive directors who manage the law firm and the lawyers they work for.

On the one hand, administrators/executive directors understand the business side of the practice;  on the other  hand, lawyers are taught and governed by those who believe their only function is to protect the public from lawyers, the very people who sign their paychecks.

Both the business and profession aspects can exist harmoniously side by side! But, we will need the best qualified folks available to both teach law students and promote lawyers' interests.
